Cancer, beyond being a health problem, burdens citizens' pockets and harms the country's economy due to the high costs and prolonged time required for treatment.
Ethiopia purchases the resources needed for radiation therapy, used in #cancer_treatment, with foreign currency, which is said to make the treatment extremely expensive.
As a solution, it has been stated that the country needs to expand nuclear medical technology to perform radiation therapy and other diagnostic procedures.
Dr. Yohannes Jorgelegebo, a nuclear pharmacist and instructor at the Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences, explains that nuclear medical technology is useful for early detection of cancer before it spreads in the body, as well as for treatment after it occurs.
He added that nuclear technology is one of the primary methods to treat cancer before it spreads and progresses in the body, at a time when cancer is severely threatening the world.
He also noted that since cancer patients are currently suffering, the expansion of this technology in the future will improve its effectiveness.
Dr. Yohannes states that other countries widely use #nuclear_medical_technology, and if it is implemented in Ethiopia, it would reduce the foreign currency spent on cancer treatment and make the service accessible to more people.
It has been reported that St. Paul’s Hospital is currently constructing a cancer treatment center to introduce nuclear technology for cancer treatment, and the process is underway.
Dr. Ejigu Kebede, a medical physicist specialist, says that if nuclear medical technology is utilized for cancer treatment and diagnosis, it would benefit many.
It is said that nuclear medical technology helps detect and treat cancer particles hidden in the body that cannot be seen with other diagnostic tools, enabling timely identification and treatment.
In Ethiopia, more than 60,000 people are diagnosed with various types of cancer each year, and over 44,000 lose their lives. According to World Health Organization data, breast and cervical cancers account for the majority of cases.
