A member of the council stated that there is a concern among the public that the Prosperity Party might use the National Dialogue Commission as a tool to obstruct its desire to transition the government’s administrative system from a parliamentary to a presidential system.

The council member who made this statement is Dr. Desalegn Chanie.

Dr. Desalegn made this remark during a meeting convened to extend the National Dialogue Commission’s mandate by an additional year and to hear the report of its three-year activities. The commission’s term was originally set to conclude on February 14.

On his part, Dr. Tesfaye Beljige, the government’s representative in parliament, said, “If it is said that a presidential administrative system is needed for Ethiopia, we can, as one of the stakeholders, present it as an agenda.”

Council member Dr. Desalegn Chanie questioned how many people believe the consultation process is legitimate. He asked whether it could be said that the commission is merely waiting passively for dry propaganda, adding that it cannot be denied that there is widespread skepticism.

Primarily, he stated that it is openly said that the Prosperity Party is expected to use the commission as a tool to achieve its political objectives, specifically to facilitate the desired transition of the government administrative system from parliamentary to presidential, and this perception is raised among the public.

Therefore, Dr. Desalegn emphasized that they must be able to properly explain this to the public.

For his part, Dr. Tesfaye Beljige, the government’s representative in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, responded to the raised idea by explaining that what the Ethiopian people are saying from one end of the country to the other is, “National Dialogue Commission, hurry up!”
