“No one has given us the answers. The problems are getting worse day by day” - Ethiopian Medical Association
The Ethiopian Medical Association has lamented that “our doctors who are suffering from various diseases and needing urgent treatment are paying the price of their lives for not receiving proper treatment promptly.”
The association said this in a statement issued today regarding the 61st Annual Medical Conference to be held from February 14 to 15, 2017.
The conference will be held under the theme “Current Situation of Health Professionals in Ethiopia and Alternative Solutions”.
Tikvah Ethiopia has also asked the association for an explanation on the experience of other countries regarding the treatment of doctors and what should be done for Ethiopian doctors.
The association’s director, Ms. Tegis, in her response, said, “There is a situation where insurance cover is often provided, although there is no research-based information regarding the experience of other countries.”
He added, “Since there is no insurance coverage in our country, we see health professionals suffering from very complex diseases that cannot be treated in a small country like any other society.”
Dr. Haru Bezabeh, a board member of the association, who asked him the same question, replied, “The problem is constant. No one has given us an answer. The problems are increasing day by day.”
What did Dr. Haru Bezabeh say in detail in his statement to Tikvah Ethiopia?
“There should be insurance coverage for doctors. We get many diseases even when we treat them, not even the diseases we ourselves have brought. Many health professionals have died from diseases they gradually acquired during the treatment process.
There are also people who become disabled while lifting a heavy patient. We work with infectious diseases. Therefore, health professionals are affected by these diseases.
Many have changed their entire careers when they learned about such problems. There is also a situation where young people abandon their studies and go to other professions.
There are no preventive measures for doctors. There is a possibility of transmission of the disease even if there is a medical facility. But there is no treatment to cure it.
Some preventive measures are expensive. The economic situation does not allow for that,” he said.
On the other hand, the association, which stated that doctors have been arrested for demanding payment of duty for their hard-earned work, indicated that a discussion will be held during the conference.
