Bench Sheko Zone Supplied Significant Amounts of Coffee to the Central Market Over the Past Three Years.
It has been reported that Bench Sheko Zone has supplied a significant amount of coffee to the central market over the past three years. The zone covers 262,000 hectares of land dedicated to coffee cultivation, of which 35,000 hectares are currently producing coffee. Although the volume of coffee production varies annually due to weather conditions, in 2016, the zone managed to produce 116,000 tons of coffee. In the current fiscal year, it is reported that approximately 96,000 tons of coffee have been produced.
Of the total production, between 30% and 70% is consumed domestically, while a portion is smuggled out of the country. Additionally, 28% of the production is supplied to the global market. According to Mr. Mesfin Gubla, the head of the zone's agriculture office, Bench Sheko Zone has been a major supplier of high-quality coffee to the central market over the past three years. He made these remarks during an interview with Bsrat Radio and Television.
In the 2014 fiscal year, the zone supplied 304,000 quintals of coffee to the central market. The South West Ethiopia Region contributes about 51% of the coffee supplied to the central market, with Bench Sheko Zone being a significant contributor. The price of coffee is determined by its quality and quantity, and so far, coffee trade in the zone has reached approximately 9 billion birr.
For the first half of 2017, the zone planned to supply 11,000 quintals of coffee and successfully supplied over 157,000 quintals. In the local market, roasted coffee for beverages is sold at prices ranging from 350 to 400 birr per kilogram.
