The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission has released warning messages regarding the recent earthquake.
The full message shared by the Commission regarding precautionary measures is as follows:
Precautions to be taken before, during and after an earthquake/earthquake/event;
Whenever there is an earthquake or tremor, first of all, not to panic, stay calm and take precautionary measures carefully; Monitoring and implementing early warning messages and not accepting and disseminating information that is not accurate or from an authentic source are highly desirable features;
It is the responsibility of every individual and family to work in coordination and cooperation with the security agencies in each area so that they do not face security and safety problems. In addition, it is appropriate not to move in restricted areas due to the risk of danger, and the following cautionary messages should be implemented by all communities.
1. Before an earthquake occurs;
• Knowing how to get out of the house or building and where to gather and stay;
• Use shields to protect oneself from objects falling from the roof or height during an accident (table, desk, pole, etc.);
• Practice in advance how oil, gas, water, electricity lines can be shut down and cut off quickly;
• Identification of large objects that could fall and cause damage during an earthquake; Early removal;
• Placing or removing flammable or hazardous liquids and chemicals in low cabinets/shelves;
• Identifying and preparing emergency supplies (medicine, flashlight, radio, clothing);

2. During an earthquake event
2.1 If in a building or house:
o Sit firmly where you are and hold objects that can be held and protect the head from injury;
o Not trying to run/move from one room/building to another room/building;
o Protect yourself by crouching under non-breakable barriers (tables, desks and pillars, beds) to protect yourself from falling objects;
o not attempt to escape or descend through a window or elevator;
o Stand facing the door and away from windows, mirrors and heavy objects;
o Remain still and not move until the earthquake stops;
2.2 If outside the house
o Do not attempt to run/move from one place to another and do not move until the earthquake stops;
o Sit/stand low and balanced in open spaces or plains away from buildings, trees, walls, power lines and poles, etc.;
2.3 If driving (if the vibration level is high)
o Choosing an open space while driving, stopping quickly, turning off the engine and staying in the vehicle following safety rules;
o Not parking the vehicle on an overpass or bridge or under a power line;
o When it becomes difficult and necessary to get out of the vehicle, get out of the vehicle and stay in an open area;
3. After an earthquake event
• Ensure that there are no fire hazards, landslides, water hazards and other hazards (power generation poles and lines, fire, chemicals, toxic substances, falling objects) that may arise following an earthquake, and take care not to cause further damage;
