"It is appropriate to bow to the house of poetry and melody. If you don’t do so, you won’t find the melody."

- Abebe Birhane (Poet and Songwriter)

#Ethiopia | Abebe Birhane, who has participated in over 300 music albums and has been on a musical journey spanning more than three decades, has provided lyrics and melodies to numerous prominent and young artists. Reflecting on his extensive career, he recently discussed his work on the album "AlTash" by young artist Ahmed Manjus, during an interview with FM Addis 97.1's program.

???? "Whether an album has one, six, or ten songs, it’s all the same to me. The main focus is whether the work I’ve done for the album has beauty. That’s what I concentrate on."

???? "My relationship with Ahmed Manjus began when he won a talent competition and came to my house in the morning. He came with a sense of hunger and eagerness. We started by creating a single song, which I initially doubted but eventually embraced."

???? "He asked me, 'I want to make an album, but how do I do it?' This is a common question from many artists coming from Idol. I told him not to worry and that we would try things out. That’s how the 'AlTash' album began."

???? "The song 'By Her Name' was inspired by Manjus frequently mentioning 'Amina' in his conversations. I thought Amina was his mother, but when we went to Kombolecha for work, he told me she was his sister. That’s how this song came about."

???? "The song 'AlTash' was originally composed for Dawit Tsige. My cousin also suddenly called me, saying he loved the song after hearing it. By coincidence, Manjus heard it among the sampled songs in his mobile phone and liked it, so we worked on it."

???? "I have collaborated with poet and songwriter Yilma Gebreab on various occasions, and we continue to work together. Giving a song to Yilma is a deliberate decision, as his ability to create such profound work at his age is astonishing. I often worry about whether I can produce something worthy of him. Working with Yilma on 'AlTash' and 'By Her Name' was a fulfilling experience."

???? "A new love-themed album is in the works. Addis has been incredibly supportive, creating a conducive environment for us to work. Her feedback and corrections are invaluable, going above and beyond her own responsibilities."

When asked about the source of his humility, honesty, and gentleness, which many admire, Abebe Birhane responded:

???? "Music is a very delicate thing. What matters is the feeling we get when we listen to it in silence after it’s released, not the effort it took to create it. I can’t even begin to describe the dedication required. It’s essential to humble oneself before the house of melody and poetry. If you don’t, you won’t find the melody."
