On December 10, 2012, at 12:21 in the morning, ETRSS-01, the first earth observation satellite in Ethiopia's history, was launched from the Chinese satellite launch station.

 

The satellite: In addition to providing information used for weather forecasting, city planning and surveying, mapping, mineral research and exploration, it was also suggested that Ethiopia could reduce the cost of satellite rental.

 

ETRSS-1 is 628 km from Earth. Abdisa Yilma, Director General of the Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute, said that during her three-year stay at a distance, she collected various important data and sent them to the data receiving station at the Enteto Observatory Center.

 

Ato Abdisa said in a program organized by the Science Museum about the satellite's 3-year duration, he stated that ETRSS-1 has transmitted information used for the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, including forest cover monitoring, tourism destinations, and weather forecasting.

 

"We are grateful for the information that ETRSS-1 has sent us, and for the inspiration it has created in our children, which is the starting point for us to launch the second satellite," said the Director-General and pointed out that December 10 is being celebrated as Space Science Day every year.

 

Ato Abdisa said that the estimated duration of the first satellite is two and a half years, but six months have been added to the planned period.
