To address this and provide a lasting solution, the medical team at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, New York, utilized a medical approach known as EXIT (Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment) during the delivery process.

EXIT is a specialized surgical procedure used during delivery when urgent medical intervention is needed to prevent a baby with a heart condition from struggling to breathe before being fully born.

Using this medical approach as a foundation, for the first time in medical history, a successful surgery was performed while the mother was in labor, with the baby partially in the womb, receiving adequate blood and oxygen. This remarkable and complex medical feat was carried out with great skill.

Six weeks after the surgery, it was reported that little Luciano was recovering well.

Luciano’s mother expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am so thankful to the doctors and everyone here for saving him and helping him come into this world.”

Dr. Sameh Said, the head of pediatric cardiac surgery, told ABC News, “The surgery was successful, and it should pave the way for other children with similar conditions.”
