It has been stated that the foreign currency reserve stock of the National Bank of Ethiopia has increased by 200 percent compared to where it stood nine months ago.
The Governor of the National Bank, Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, said that since the exchange rate of the #foreign_currency reserve was allowed to be determined by the market starting from Hamle 22, 2016 E.C. (July 29, 2024 Gregorian Calendar), it has increased significantly. With three months remaining in the budget year, he noted that the plan has been successful.
He stated that since the macroeconomic reforms, the long-standing foreign currency shortage deeply rooted in the Ethiopian economy for many years is being fundamentally addressed step-by-step, and its flow is also increasing.
The Governor explained that the National Bank of Ethiopia held a discussion with bank executives yesterday regarding the overall management and performance of foreign currency.
During the discussion, directives were issued to address some observed performance issues and to ensure strict enforcement of foreign currency guidelines. In particular, it was reported that instructions were given to banks to make their commission and service fees reasonable.
Mr. Mamo also mentioned that transparent foreign currency auctions will be held every two weeks, at least until the end of the current budget year.
He added that strict monitoring and oversight will be conducted on those conducting foreign currency transactions outside the banking system, smuggling it abroad, engaging in illegal money transfers, or violating the #National_Bank's operational and regulatory systems.
He further cautioned that companies involved in such activities, as well as unlicensed companies and individuals, will have their connections with Ethiopia’s banking system completely severed.
