What to do before, during and after an earthquake?

#Ethiopia | In light of the recent earthquakes, here are some safety tips that you can use.

(Kahnu Moges)

1. What to do before an earthquake?

To reduce the risk and stay safe during an earthquake, do the following:

• Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, battery-operated radio, flashlight and extra batteries in your home.

• Learn or practice first aid.

• Know how to turn off gas, water and electricity.

• Make a plan for where you will meet your family after an earthquake.

• Remove heavy objects from shelves (they will fall during shaking).

• Secure heavy furniture, cabinets and appliances to walls or floors.

• Learn about earthquake plans at your workplace and with people who live in your home.

2. What to do during an earthquake?

During an earthquake, do the following:

• Stay calm! If you are indoors, stay inside. If you are outdoors, stay outside.

• If you are indoors, stand on a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or get under heavy furniture (a table or bookcase). Stay away from windows and outside doors.

• If you are outdoors, stay in an open area away from power lines or falling objects. Stay away from buildings (objects can fall from the building or the building can collapse on you).

• Do not use lighters, candles, or any open flame. A broken gas line and fire do not mix.

• If you are in a car, stop the car and stay in the car until the shaking stops.

• Do not use elevators (they may stop).

3. What to do after an earthquake

After an earthquake, do the following

• Check yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid to anyone in need.

• Check water, gas, and electrical lines for damage. If damage occurs, turn off the valves. Check for gas odors. If you smell gas, open windows and doors, leave immediately, and call authorities (use someone else’s phone).

• Turn on the radio. Do not use the phone unless it is an emergency.

• Stay out of damaged buildings.

• Be careful around broken glass and debris. Wear boots or sturdy shoes to protect your feet.

• Be careful around chimneys (they may fall on you).

• Stay away from beaches. Tsunamis and seiches can sometimes hit after the earthquake has stopped.

• Stay away from affected areas.

• If you are at school or work, follow the emergency plan or instructions from the safety officer.

Expect more aftershocks.
