The Ethiopian Metrology says we need to develop the best forecast apps to better our forecast accuracy.

The Ethiopian Meteorological Institute stated that the accuracy of current forecast data is 75 percent.

Based on data obtained from forecast monitoring equipment, the director of the institute, Mr. Fetene Teshome, mentioned that there are times when the forecast can be as accurate as 90 percent or even 100 percent.

However, regarding the current forecast accuracy being 75 percent, they questioned why discrepancies occur, such as predicting a sunny day but it turns out cloudy, or forecasting light rain but experiencing heavy rain instead.

When asked where this discrepancy comes from, the director explained that they operate using the same equipment available worldwide. He noted that forecast discrepancies might arise due to limitations in knowledge, unexpected global events, and similar factors.

To assist in collecting accurate forecast data, the institute is installing four weather monitoring radars in various parts of Ethiopia.

The director, Mr. Fetene, mentioned that these radars can collect forecast data within a 250 km radius from their installation sites. He added that these radars are used globally to gather reliable forecast data.

The official also highlighted that there are over 1,372 stations across the country where forecast data is collected. Recently, automatic data collection stations that send information to the main center every 15 minutes have been installed, along with five additional stations in various locations that collect high-altitude weather data.

The forecast information disseminated is based on an analysis of data gathered from all these data collection stations.

When asked how data is collected in remote Ethiopian areas far from these stations, the official explained that, on one hand, they obtain information from these areas using satellite imagery.

On the other hand, data from remote areas without collection stations is gathered through Ethiopia's exchange of weather forecast information with neighboring countries.

The exchange of weather forecast data between countries is particularly important for understanding meteorological phenomena over the Mediterranean Sea and their impact on Ethiopia's climate.

The director of the Meteorological Institute, Mr. Fetene Teshome, mentioned that countries like Kenya exchange data with Ethiopia at border points where climate patterns interact.

Mr. Fetene explained that Ethiopia's ability to exchange forecast data is due to its membership in the World Meteorological Organization.
