16.5 million liters of fuel are being supplied per month for the construction of Bishoftu Airport

It has been reported that the amount of fuel required per month for the construction of Bishoftu Airport is being calculated and supplied in a special way

The Ethiopian Airlines Group has announced that the amount of fuel required per month for the construction of the Bishoftu International Airport (Airport) in Abusera, near Bishoftu town, Oromia Region, has been calculated and supplied in a special way, and 16.5 million liters of fuel are being supplied in a special way.

The foundation stone for the construction of Bishoftu International Airport was laid on January 2, 2018 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.). The Director General of the Petroleum and Energy Authority, Dr. Destawe Mekwant, told reporters that the Bishoftu Airport is a major national project and that a separate fuel allocation calculation has been made for it.

The Ethiopian Airlines Group has requested more than 17 million liters of fuel per month for this national mega project, but the country is currently receiving 16.5 million liters of fuel, in line with the fuel it imports. He noted that this allocation calculation was calculated on an average basis based on the daily supply.

For this purpose, he added that fuel supply companies have been asked to bury tankers in advance and sign contracts with contractors. He said that three contractors are currently participating in the project, and seven major companies have been contracted to supply fuel to each of them. He said that the major companies were selected based on their logistical capabilities.

He explained that the Ethiopian Airlines Group wanted to work with only two or three companies, but the number of suppliers has been increased, explaining that it is necessary to consider possible problems in fuel distribution.

He explained that 84 percent of the fuel imported into the country is used directly for public service and the rest is allocated for large projects, adding that the fuel currently being supplied to Bishoftu Airport is being distributed in a special way and is being used to ensure that the share of the community that directly benefits is not lost. Destayu (Dr.), who said that a study was conducted to determine how much fuel the project requires and that the share provided may be higher as the work process is strengthened and the number of vehicles increases, pointed out that the share provided may be higher.

The Director General said that the current supply is not sufficient in view of the demand presented by the Ethiopian Airlines Group, and explained that the country is distributing as much as possible for the project.

He noted that the project is one of the national priority projects, but did not forget to mention that the fuel-related problem will not stop the work.

The airport, which is being built in Bishoftu town, 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, is expected to have a capacity to handle up to 110 million passengers per year when completed in ten years, and the first phase alone will be able to handle 60 million passengers per year.

Speaking at the project launch ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.), said that Bole International Airport will handle about 21 million passengers this year due to expansion works carried out over the years.

The Prime Minister, while explaining the main reason for the urgent need to start the construction of the Bishoftu Airport, stated that if the number of passengers increases by two million every year, Bole International Airport will not be able to handle the additional passengers in two to three years.

“If we recognize that problem now and do not start work today, we will have difficulty maintaining the name of the pride of Africa, the great airline. Therefore, this decision was taken because we need to work today for tomorrow,” he said.

It is worth noting that the total construction cost of the Bishoftu Airport is estimated at 12.5 billion dollars, Ethiopian Airlines Group told Reporter.
