Africans should make Ethiopia's Green Footprint program a continental agenda and implement it: Ato Demeke Mekonen
******************
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Ato Demeke Mekonen stated that Africans should implement Ethiopia's Green Footprint Program as a continental agenda.
The African Leadership Academy held its first Pan-Africanism Forum today alongside the 36th African Union Leaders' Summit.
At the forum focused on revitalizing the idea and movement of Pan-Africanism, Ethiopia presented its green footprint experience.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ato Demeke Mekonen said at the same time, the government has implemented the Green Footprint program in the last four years and has planted more than 20 billion saplings with the participation of Ethiopians.
He said that extensive work has been done in the program to ensure food security and sustainable development as well as to deal with climate change.
He also mentioned that the government has been committed to making the Green Footprint Program a continental agenda beyond Ethiopia since last year.
He stated that since green development is beneficial for all human beings, it would be good if the works started in Ethiopia continue in other countries.
Therefore, he pointed out that apart from coping with the climate change that is putting pressure on Africans, they should implement the Green Footprint program as a continental agenda to eliminate poverty.
Green Footprint National Committee Coordinator Dr. Adefers Worku, on his part, raised the fact that Ethiopia is covering its desolate landscape with Arengesde.
Furthermore, they explained that Ethiopia is carrying out forest development work in the river basins so that the transboundary rivers that connect it with its neighbors do not dry up.
He also mentioned that Ethiopia's Green Footprint program indicates that Africans must rise together to deal with the impact of global climate change.
Therefore, following the program started by Ethiopia, they said that we should repeat Pan-Africanism through green development, ESA reported.
