The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Wegagen Bank have obtained Ethiopia’s first investment bank licenses.

CBE Capital Share Company Investment Bank and Wegagen Capital Share Company Investment Bank are the first investment banks to receive these licenses.

These banks are independently established investment banks that exclusively operate in the capital market sector.

In addition, licenses have been granted to five capital market service providers.

It is stated that the licensed service providers have met the requirements and standards stipulated by the law.

Regarding these licenses, the Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia and Chairperson of the Capital Market Authority Board, Mamo Mihretu, made an announcement today.

The Standing Committee on Water, Irrigation, Lowland Areas and Environmental Development of the House of People’s Representatives held discussions with government and private sector stakeholders on the draft proclamation on solid waste management and disposal.

The draft proclamation states that individuals will be responsible for cleaning up to 20 meters of their residential areas and up to 50 meters of organizations and will prohibit single-use plastic bags.

The Director General of the Environmental Protection Authority, Lelyse Neme, stated that the draft proclamation supports the movement to create a clean and green Ethiopia that the country has started.

He said that single-use plastic bags are causing various health problems in the community by polluting the environment and making it difficult to collect.

The Standing Committee Chairperson, Fatia Ahmed, stated that the draft proclamation will be subject to ongoing discussions involving many stakeholders to ensure its long-term viability.

Information received from the House of People's Representatives indicates that the proclamation was prepared to prevent and control the impact and harm that solid waste is causing to the environment and human safety and health.

Of the unpaid amount, 3.2 billion birr is owed by 62 individuals who, despite repeated calls to settle their debts, have been unwilling to pay and have been barred from leaving the country.

This support, aimed at assisting individuals who have suffered physical injuries from incidents including war and other accidents, is said to make a significant contribution to efforts in Ethiopia to provide quality healthcare services and support people with disabilities.

The production resources for assistive devices were donated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to Ethiopia’s assistive device services. Dr. Ayele Teshome, the Deputy Minister of Health, stated that this assistance will help produce modern prosthetic limbs, including artificial hands and legs, as well as other supportive tools for individuals injured due to war and other incidents.

Dr. Ayele noted that people with disabilities in Ethiopia often struggle to access sufficient assistive devices, and producing these tools domestically would be highly beneficial.

Mr. Kaleab Tadese, the Ethiopia Director of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), explained that the support was provided through an agreement with the Ministry of Health to produce assistive devices for citizens needing them due to injuries from conflicts and other causes. He added that the resources are intended for local production and that the organization is also training professionals to facilitate this effort.

It was also mentioned that the JDC had previously donated various medical equipment to 48 hospitals.

The institution is working to support Ethiopian citizens with physical injuries and those in need of assistive devices by introducing Israel’s modern technologies to other countries. Avital Sandlerof, the Director General of JDC, stated that this initiative helps approximately ten thousand people with disabilities each year.

Ato Berhanu Adelo Gebremariam, who was a cabinet minister under former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, has been nominated to the parliament today, January 22, 2017, to be nominated as a Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
