The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) conducted a $92 million shortfall (additional demand) in its $500 million foreign exchange auction today.

This is the highest since the bank began disclosing the gap between the amount of foreign exchange offered and the amount required.

The central bank offered $500 million today, while the demand from the bidding banks was $592.3 million, according to the bank’s data.

The bank’s auction strengthened the purchasing power of the Ethiopian birr by 11 cents compared to the previous one.

The National Bank, which held its 15th round of auctions on January 12, held its 16th round of foreign exchange auction today.

Accordingly, the $500 million offered was sold at an average rate of 154.81 birr per US dollar.

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has conducted a foreign exchange auction today, with 31 banks participating, an increase of 10 banks compared to the previous auction.

In today’s foreign exchange auction, 25 out of 31 banks bought or received one dollar at 154.81 birr.

In the previous auction, only 15 out of 21 banks participated in the auction.

This is 10 banks less than today’s auction.

It is reported that the amount of foreign exchange offered today for the 16th time is $430 million more than the amount offered on January 12.

The gap created in the previous auction was $24.7 million.

Previously dependent on textile production, Hawassa Industrial Park is now undergoing a technological transformation by implementing modern production methods supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

Addis Ababa, April 12, 2018 (FMC) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said that the new economic approach we have achieved has achieved strong double-digit growth in a short period of time.

In a statement released on his social media page, the Prime Minister said; This morning, we have begun to review the performance of the government in the third 100 days of his term, alongside the overall performance of the nine months.

We will continue to work hard to achieve our goals in each sector; 7.9 percent in agriculture, 13.2 percent in industry, and 9.3 percent in services will be achieved without interruption. 

‎This effort demonstrates our position and ability to implement to build a more resilient, competitive and inclusive economy, he said in his message.

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has confirmed that its customers are 80 percent satisfied with the services it provides, according to a survey conducted by the bank.

The bank said this at the opening ceremony of its Customer Service Week, which it has started to conduct.

The CBE said it is working hard to address issues related to operational transparency, service quality fluctuations, service delays, network outages, system failures, departmental coordination, employee attitudes and work culture that were previously seen in its service delivery.

The Customer Service Week is mainly celebrated through awareness-raising and feedback-gathering discussions with customers, and social responsibility activities such as blood donation and tree care are also carried out, said Ato Ephraim Mekuria, the bank’s president’s representative.

Ephrem also noted that the bank raised more than 325 billion birr in additional deposits in the first half of the 2018 fiscal year alone, bringing its total deposits to 2 trillion birr. 

In addition to the loans previously provided to investors engaged in the agricultural sector, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has recently facilitated agricultural loans to smallholder and group-organized farmers and pastoralists, the official noted. 

The bank also expanded loans for small-scale construction and purchase of houses, personal business transactions, and purchase of cars, the bank said. 

It was also reported that CBE is offering a loan service called "CBE BeJ" that allows you to get a loan of 500 to 150 thousand birr without collateral using only the CBE Birr Plus application.

It was also mentioned that a digital wallet service called CBE Connect was recently launched that can be used by members of the diaspora.

A deal has been signed to produce and supply an energy storage system to prevent power outages in Ethiopia.

The agreement was signed between a local private sector technology company called Inda Power Group and a Chinese technology company called China Southern Green Technology (CSGT).

We have heard that this Chinese technology company has developed a battery that can store electricity and release power during power outages.

The battery is powered by renewable energy, said Hamde Ibrahim, Corporate Communications Manager of Inda Power.

He mentioned that the technology will provide relief to many, especially to the rural residents of the country who have not yet seen light, without the need to lay electricity lines.

According to the agreement, the battery will be supplied to the Ethiopian Electric Service upon request after the battery is manufactured and installed.

In this way, the project will be divided into three phases and will be implemented over a four-year period from 2026 to 2030, in line with Ethiopia’s ambitious goal of providing electricity to all its citizens by 2030, said Ato Idris Adem, founder and CEO of Edan Power Group.

So far, only 5.2 million of its total customers are connected to the main grid, Ethiopian Electric Service told us.

This new technology is being developed with the private sector to provide access to renewable energy, especially for those who are far from the grid and those who do not have access to electricity, according to Ato Farid Abdusalam, Director of Network Infrastructure and Excellence of the service.

Chinese companies that were previously involved in trade and investment are now turning their attention to electricity following the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which will help strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries, said Ato Dejene Abera, Director of the Middle East and Asia Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit, the ambassador said that the work being done by startups and industry professionals in agriculture, health technology and other key sectors is completely changing the future of Ethiopia.

“The technological achievements, the depth of knowledge, energy and active participation that are visible on every floor, in every corner and on the face of every person; it shows me that there is immense power, potential and inspiration in this country and its youth; Ethiopia is unstoppable,” he said.

He noted that the partnership between the governments of Ethiopia and the United States is strong; he stressed the need to strengthen this partnership at the institutional level. 

He noted that there is a favorable environment for startups in the finance, health and agriculture sectors to collaborate with large Ethiopian companies.

Noting that prominent American companies are currently present in Ethiopia and have the opportunity to expand their operations, the ambassador said; Ethiopia is demonstrating in practice that it is not lagging behind in the field of technology.

#Uganda

In Uganda, Robert Kayagulani, the main challenger to President Yoweri Museveni, was given 48 hours to surrender to police from yesterday.

Kayagulani was given the warning by the president's son, General Muzi Kenerugaba, who is also the country's army chief, Africa News reported.

Robert Kayagulani is said to have gone into hiding following the disputed election.

Former activist and stage name Bobby Wine, Robert Kayagulani, has said that the election in which President Yoweri Museveni won was a massive fraud.

Kayagulani is understood to have refused to contest the election results, which he is seeking to have.

He is said to be pursuing alternative peaceful means of struggle.

The Nigerian army has freed 62 people held hostage by gunmen in the northwestern part of the country.

Five soldiers and a policeman were killed in the rescue operation, Africa News reported.

Two of the kidnappers were also killed.

Three kidnappers and several weapons were seized during the rescue operation.

The kidnappers are said to be bandits.

Zamfara state is also a region where the Boko Haram extremist group has been active, the report said.

The rebels are said to have captured the town of Pajut.

SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar has been in prison for almost a year for inciting rebellion against the government.

His wife, Angelina Teni, was recently dismissed from her position as interior minister.

The second comprehensive agreement is said to have failed.

Fintech Investment PLC recently defrauded over 1,200 Ethiopians out of 1.7 billion birr by falsely promising BYD electric vehicle imports. The scandal, exposed in late March 2026, involved fake partnerships and high-profile endorsements.[1][2]

## The Scam Details

The Addis Ababa-based company marketed EVs like the BYD Seagull via social media, claiming quick deliveries within 90 days for down payments up to 1.36 million birr each.  They imported only 148 vehicles through Djibouti, distributing about 100 to insiders while secretly selling 48 others and pocketing funds.  No real ties existed with BYD, despite showcased cars at spots like Meskel Square to build trust.[2][3][4][5][1]

## Legal Actions

Ethiopian Federal Police charged CEO Daniel Yohannes and accomplices like Solomon Bogale with 19 counts of fraud, conspiracy, and cybercrimes in March 2026.  Several celebrities and influencers faced arrest for promotions, with some suspects fleeing.  The probe revealed a Djibouti shell company "Alfatizo" used for shady purchases.[4][5][1][2]
